Black Friday - Cool Name, Miserable Gimmick!
So, today was Black Friday.....the day where insane people line up at the doors of Walmart and Target at 3am for their $40 portable DVD players and $10 Espresso makers, etc...I absolutely LOVE to watch the madness on news shows! I laugh until tears are pouring out of my eyes at the fools scooping this crap up like it may contain their Golden Ticket (Willie Wonka Factory reference) to unending fame and fortune. And then there are always the poor sad souls who didn't get THEIR Espresso maker so they blast and curse the wretched fools who did - ah, craziness. When are people going to wake up and smell their Starbucks and realize - HELLO?!?!?! It's all a gimmick! "Yeah, I'll lure you in with promises of glistening electronics (well, for the first 20 people in the door anyway) and when we run out, you can soak up all of the festive spirit and buy other things - and buy.... and buy.... and buy...mwahahahahah" says the man with the Armani suit sitting in his posh office worth more mony than the Witch family will see in this Incarnation. That is the basis and the very foundation of these corporate giants - lure them in and then get them to spend - on EVERYTHING! Everything from buy 4 get 1 free bottles of shampoo to $1 items galore to decorations that will make your house "unique" and "Martha Stewart-sh" and surely the envy of the block. Guys and Dolls, why do you fall for it? Why do you feed these corporate beasts as they destroy our small shops and sense of community and beautiful landscape? Let "Black Friday" be the day you mourn for the jeans that you can't wear for a few days because you ate too much the night before, stay home, and do something enjoyable...walk outside, play with your kids, spend time with family....stop feeding the corporate monsters!!! Don't "buy" their gimmick! You know, I just talked to a friend of mine, Sandy, who owns a New Age shop down town. She says her sales catalogoues are FULL of tips on "how to get people to spend more w/product placement, lighting, etc."...her and I scoffed at the ridiculousness of this - she said that she wants people to come to her store, look, enjoy and buy only what calls to them - not just buy because it was on a shelf next the register and oh, what the hell it's only $2.....that's 2 loaves of bread at Save a Lot! I really admire Sandy - she maintains the values of the American consumer/supplier relationship! L'Chaim Sandy - I love ya! OK, time for Mama and Papa to go spend time....YAY! Pap Witch is the best, he brought home some treats for his girls tonight - I love that Man!!!!
